Why we switched from SolidWorks to Onshape

We started out designing the DarkAero 1 using SolidWorks CAD software to 3D model our airplane. SolidWorks is a common CAD tool to use for experimental aircraft as they are partnered with the Experimental Aircraft Association. Along the way we switched over to Onshape. It was a leap to stray from the industry standard tool but we saw unique advantages using Onshape.

The main reasons behind our switch were:

1. Onshape is cloud based and accessed through a web browser which meant we didn't need costly CAD workstations.
2. The part studio approach for designing in Onshape allowed for easy modeling of our airframe structures.
3. We preferred the user interface of Onshape over SolidWorks.

We have used Onshape since 2016 and are pleased with how it has performed.
