Energy Methods for the Dissipative Wave Equation

We consider the wave equation with a dissipative term. The reason that this equation is dissipative is that the energy functional for the wave equation is non-increasing, so it is possible for the energy of the system to decrease. This implies that there exists dissipation or friction of some sort in the system.
