Transfer Record! Where was £5 BILLION Spent by Top 5 Leagues?

Over £5 BILLION was spent by clubs in the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Serie A during the transfer window. This is a record for the top 5 leagues in Europe. We look at where the majority of the money was spent by ranking who were the biggest signings in each league.

All the numbers in this video come from the Guardian’s excellent transfer tracker: https://www.theguardian.com/football/ng-interactive/2019/jun/04/football-transfer-window-2019-every-summer-deal-from-europe-top-five-leagues

Two of the top 4 biggest signings in football history happened during this transfer window with Antoine Griezmann moving from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona and Joao Felix heading top Atletico Madrid from Benfica. Elsewhere in La Liga Real Madrid revamped their side and paid two of the five highest fees in the division for the excellent attacking talents of Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard.

Ligue 1 has been dominated by PSG in recent seasons and other clubs are now starting to spend big to challenge their dominance, the biggest fee in the division was paid by Monaco to secure Wissam Ben Yedder from Sevilla.

Serie A would seem to be undergoing something of a renaissance this season with both Napoli and Inter Milan making serious moves to challenge the dominance of Juventus. Inter indeed spent the single biggest amount on a single player with the acquisition of Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United. The striker will be hoping to rejuvenate his club career after a sorry end to his initially promising Man Utd spell.

Germany’s Bundesliga was surprisingly fifth out of the five big leagues for the amount of transfer business concluded, but large fees were still paid including Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard joining Bayern Munich, and Mats Hummels returning to Borussia Dortmund.

In the Premier League Manchester United spent big on their defence to try and regain some momentum on the sides pulling ahead of them with the world record fee for a defender of £80m for Harry Maguire. Man City also paid large fees for Joao Cancelo and Rodri. Arsenal surprised many, including their own fanbase by winning the race for £72m Nicolas Pepe.

Record spending is being driven by the clubs collective record revenues, from increased TV deals and commercial investment. Do you think clubs are still getting value for money with the large transfer fees that are being paid? Let us know your views in the comments!
