Ray Charles documentary (1986)

From a background of abject poverty in the deep South Ray Charles went on to become one of the most successful performers in the history of popular music. He was blind by the age of 7, but he had begun to play the piano, taught by the man who ran the general store next door.
From the late 50s he made a string of hits starting with the million-seller 'What'd l say?', then 'Georgia', 'Unchain my heart', 'Hit the road Jack' and the biggest of all 'I can't stop loving you'.
In a rare television interview this reclusive star talks to Charlie Gillett , and with a filmed record of his latest sell-out London concert, and classic Charles performances from the past, this documentary looks at the music of the man Sinatra called 'the only real genius in the business.'
