Power Steering Fluid on the High Mileage Toyota
I’m a former engineer in EDP (Engineerjng Design Powertrain) at Toyota and I am doing maintenance on my 2009 4runner. I made a few choices for this power steering flush including a regular, non-dyed power steering fluid. For me, good visibility on the fluid is higher priority than choosing a fancy fluid.
The injtial flush used one bottle of the PS fluid. I emptied the reservoir into a container, refilled with new fluid, ran the pump for a minute, emptied afain and refilled with fresh fluid. After a few days, the reservoir was dark again but not murky. I’d guess the system capacity is about 3x the reservoir size, or about one 32oz bottle.
The User Manual maintenance Supplement says Fluid type: ATF dextron II or III (which is similar to PS fluid but with additives for transmissions “special needs”.) But a simple PS pump does not have all these special needs.
I hope you find these choices informative and helpful to understand your maintenance and more confidently DIY on an old Toyota (or any engine for that matter) 🤓
If you have experience with a 4th Gen 4Runner, share those tips in the comments! -David
