Surgery for Herniated Cervical Disc: Different Types of Surgery
Once you know you need surgery for a herniated cervical disc, the next step is to determine what type of surgery you will have. In this video, cervical spine surgeon Dr. Seth Neubardt explains that when a disc is bulging out, putting pressure on the nerves, the objectives of surgery are to remove the disc and then stabilize the spine.
Options for how to meet those objectives include taking an anterior or posterior approach, having open or microscopic surgery, and stabilizing the spine with fusion or disc replacement.
In the video, Dr. Neubardt shows what an artificial cervical device used in disc replacement looks like and how it works. He also demonstrates a plate and screw system used in cervical spine fusion. Watch the video to learn about these procedures and become a more informed patient.
Before undergoing surgery for a herniated cervical disc, you should also watch the surgical walk-through video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR1crnd_8Ew so you will know what to expect during your procedure. The video is about 30 minutes long, but well worth the time spent.
