Health Inequalities and The Glasgow Effect

http://rightproperty.com

The Glasgow Effect describes the widest differences in life expectancy in the UK, between 54 years in some areas compared to 82 years in the more affluent areas.

There are significant health inequalities in terms of mortality, physical illness, mental health and wellbeing, lifestyle behaviours associated with ill health and access to and use of health services.

What is most pronounced about health inequalities is that where you live determines your life expectancy.

The leading public health expert in the world, Professor Sir Michael Marmot, has said "...I have spent my academic career emphasising the evidence that the key determinants of health lie outside the health care system."

People seek health care when they need it. Health care is, therefore, preceded by preventative care and because location is a factor, the built environment is a key component in the fight to reduce health inequalities.
