Is Almaty City the best city in Central Asia? There is more to do in and around Almaty city than any other city, yet so many people miss the best bits! Local people and friends living in the area really helped us to make the most of this city and now we are excited to share it with you!

After months of travelling around Central Asia, Almaty fast became our favourite city, we visited many times and feel like there is still so much to see. If you have any places to add in that we’ve missed, please add it in the comments below.

Here are the details of how to do these awesome things:

1. Coffeegram - this is a coffee shop located on Zhibek Zholy street. Order your coffee and send them your favourite picture to print on the coffee.

2. Zhibek Zholy - this is a very central walking street in Almaty with street performers and coffee shops. You can get here by bus, subway or taxi. It is a short walk from Ascension cathedral and the Zelony Bazaar.

3. Almaty Metro: Unique metro stations - at present there is one subway line that runs from Almaty 2 train station and along Abay street. Some of the central stations are decorated with wonderful artwork.

4. Ascension cathedral (Zenkov cathedral) - this beautiful Russian orthodox cathedral is situated in a lovely park in central Almaty (Gogolya street and Kunaeva street)

5. Best shashlik in the world - there are a couple of awesome Shashlik restaurants on the junction of Rozybakeva and Basinova street (Esmeralda). You can find many other Shashlik places around the city.

6. Green Bazaar (Zelony Bazaar) - very centrally located near Zhibek Zholy and Ascension Cathedral.

7. Kok Tobe (You can get a bus and walk up, taxi or go to the junction of Abay and Dostyk and take a cable car for 1,000 tenge) Kok Tobe THE PLACE to go and enjoy an atmospheric and scenic sunset. There are lots of crazy fun activities up here too.

8. First presidents park - this is located at the intersection of Navoi and Al-Farabi. You can get here by bus or taxi. Entrance is FREE :-)

9. Shymbulak (Chimbulak) glacier
Bus to Medeo + 3 cable car rides and a trek for about 1.5 hours
In the winter you can skii or snowboard at Chimbulak

10. Almaty lake: Take bus 28 to Alma-Arasan (the bus goes up the road to the mountains from near the First President's park) and then hitch hike or take a taxi to Almaty lake. Once you are on the road to the lake everyone will know where you want to go.
