সৈয়দ আব্দুল হাদী , ১৯৪০ সালের ব্রাহ্মণবাড়ীয়া জেলার কসবা উপজেলার শাহপুর গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন।
বেড়ে উঠেছেন আগরতলা, সিলেট, ব্রাহ্মণবাড়ীয়া এবং কলকাতায়। তবে তার কলেজ জীবন কেটেছে রংপুর আর ঢাকায়। ১৯৫৮ সালে সৈয়দ আবদুল হাদী ভর্তি হন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বাংলা বিভাগে।

সৈয়দ আব্দুল হাদী জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শিক্ষকতা করেছেন। বাংলাদেশ টেলিভিশনে প্রযোজক হিসেবেও তিনি কাজ করেছেন। সর্বশেষে তিনি লন্ডনে ওয়েল্স ইউনিভার্সিটিতে প্রিন্সিপাল লাইব্রেরীয়ান হিসেবে কাজ করেছেন।
সৈয়দ আবদুল হাদী দেশাত্ববোধক গানের জন্য জনপ্রিয়। পঞ্চাশ বছরেরও বেশি সময় ধরে তিনি সঙ্গীত করছেন।
১৯৬০ সালে ছাত্রজীবন থেকেই চলচ্চিত্রে গান গাওয়া শুরু করেন। ১৯৬৪ সালে সৈয়দ আবদুল হাদী একক কণ্ঠে প্রথম বাংলা সিনেমায় গান করেন।

সৈয়দ আব্দুল হাদী ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র থাকার সময়েই চলচ্চিত্রে গান করার সুযোগ পান । ১৯৬০ সালে ‘ইয়ে ভি এক কাহানি’ ছবিতে প্রথম প্লে-ব্যাক করেন। এরপর আরও কয়েকটি উর্দু ছবিতে গান গাইবার পর ১৯৬৪ সালে পরিচালক মোস্তাফিজুর রহমানের ছবি ‘ডাক বাবু’-তে গান গাওয়ার মধ্য দিয়ে প্রথম বাংলা কোনো ছবিতে গান গাওয়া হয় তার।

মোহাম্মদ মনিরুজ্জামানের লেখা ‘চাতুরী জানেনা মোর বধূয়া’ গানটি গেয়েছিলেন তিনি আলী হোসেনের সুরে। গানটি ওই সময় ব্যাপক শ্রোতাপ্রিয়তা পেয়েছিল। সৈয়দ আব্দুল হাদী সবচেয়ে বেশি ডুয়েট গান করেছেন সাবিনা ইয়াসমিনের সঙ্গে।

প্রয়াত সুবল দাসের অনুপ্রেরণায় সঙ্গীত পরিচালনা করেছিলেন ‘ফেরারী’ নামের একটি ছবির। একটি ছবিতে গানও লিখেছিলেন তিনি। তিনি প্রথম জাতীয় চলচ্চিত্র পুরস্কার পান আমজাদ হোসেন পরিচালিত ‘গোলাপী এখন ট্রেনে’ ছবিতে গান গাওয়ার জন্য।

সৈয়দ আবদুল হাদী পাঁচবার জাতীয় চলচ্চিত্র পুরস্কার লাভ করেন। ২০০০ সালে সঙ্গীতে অবদানের জন্য তিনি বাংলাদেশের দ্বিতীয় সর্বোচ্চ বেসামরিক সম্মান একুশে পদক লাভ করেন।
