Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
April 12, 2018
Over 2,000 Filipinos in Hong Kong warmly received President Rodrigo Roa Duterte at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal for the President’s meeting with the Filipino community.
As the President entered the venue, the audience, composed of Filipinos living and working in Hong Kong, cheered for the President and the accompanying members of his delegation. President Duterte greeted the audience with his signature bow.
During the program, a Filipina singer in Hong Kong serenaded the Chief Executive with one of his favorite classic Filipino songs and he enthusiastically joined her in singing.
In his message, President Duterte commended his ‘kababayans’ for their perseverance and hard work to provide for their families in the Philippines. He also thanked them for their continued support to his administration’s efforts in fighting corruption within the government and his war on illegal drugs.
As of January 2018, there are approximately 222,000 Filipinos in Hong Kong. Most of them are domestic helpers, and in the hotel and restaurant industries.
There are 355 Filipino community organizations registered with the Philippine Consulate General. Most of these organizations are composed of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
