Chaser, the Smartest Dog in the World, Statue Creation, Bronzart Foundry, Sarasota, FL, Documini
Chaser was a Spartanburg Native, a beloved member of the Pilley Family and research assistant to Dr. John W. Pilley Jr., Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Wofford College.
Professor Pilley and Chaser gave the world scientific affirmation that dogs are not only smarter than we think, but capable of so much more with their groundbreaking research and her unprecedented language learning of over 1000 objects.
Those objects were her toys.
Chaser has the largest tested vocabulary of any animal on the planet, which garnered her international fame and the title of, “the Smartest Dog in the World”.
The methodology for Chaser’s learning?
Play.
"All creatures can learn and if learning does not take place, we must change the methods.” - Dr. John W. Pilley Jr.
In 2021, this bronze statue of Chaser accompanied by an imprint of John Pilley’s boots was commissioned to be created by the team of Artists, Artisans and Craftsmen at Bronzart Foundry Inc. in Sarasota, Florida, based on an original clay sculpture created by renowned Artists Betsy Scott and Carl McCleskey at Wildlife Bronze in Cloudland, Georgia. On May 10, 2021, the finished artwork was installed and unveiled in Spartanburg’s Morgan Square in South Carolina - the city where Chaser was born and raised.
The statue was made possible through a collaboration between: Monty Mullen and The Balmer Foundation, Valerie Barnet, Lora Bradley Hodge and Hub City Animal Project, Betsy Scott and Carl McCleskey at Wildlife Bronze, John Lane & Betsy Teter, Sims Bouwmeester & Launch Something, and the Pilley Family.
While we may have lost two legends in Chaser the Border Collie and John W. PIlley, their legacy continues. For more information, please visit:
