Flying to Thailand during the pandemic

We have a very different kind of video this week, showing highlights from a long day of travelling, after a much longer preparation to be able to do this travel to Thailand during the Covid-19 pandemic. Before getting a visa for the non Thai of us, the Embassy required a range of papers: A Thai health insurance which covers Covid-19, certificates showing negative Covid-19 test results and a doctor's signed Fit-to-fly papers (both within 72 hours before departure), of course in addition to plane tickets. The tickets (Thai Airways) had to be booked and paid via the Thai Embassy, since the flight we were going with was a special repatriation flight only bringing cargo from Thailand and mainly Thai nationals back to Bangkok.

The health insurance company we chose to use is Pacific Cross in Bangkok:

They could offer the required Covid-19 coverage of 100 000 USD and have been candid and swift in their correspondence so far, so that we could get the insurance certificate the Embassy needed in time.

We start in an airport hotel in Gardermoen, Oslo (Norway) very early in the morning and jump directly to Kastrup, Copenhagen (Denmark), skipping the short SAS flight in between, which apart from mandatory use of face masks and no serving of food is quite normal: a nearly fully seated flight. We have more than 7 hours to kill in Kastrup, so there is plenty of time to look around. The seats are well marked with signs encouraging social distancing, but this morning we feel there is little need: I've never seen such a vacant airport building before.

Well boarded we find that just 1 to 2 out of 3 seats are used on this flight, and that the security is impeccable: The crew is wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and each passenger's temperature is measured before takeoff. We're surprised to see the new and very aesthetically pleasing (MTV-like) safety instruction video on this Airbus. The food and service is also very good, as on any Thai Airways flight.

The big difference is that you cannot see the famous Thai smile behind the face masks and shields ;-)

After landing, at Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok, we are lined up to have our temperature measured once more, and all papers (including a certificate of entrance to the kingdom) are carefully checked before we are escorted to the immigration passport control. We have already been equipped with a badge from the Alternative State Quarantine hotel at the gate, and we are finally met by two of the hotel's drivers, also in full PPE, who escort us to the minibus and drive us to the hotel. The minibus reminds me about an ICU at a hospital: it's sealed with plastic curtains between us and any others that might drive along with us (it was only the two of us this morning). Once at the hotel, we have our temperatures read again, before we eventually can go to our hotel room, where we stay during the whole quarantine period of two weeks.
