The Old City is a 0.9-square-kilometre (0.35 sq mi) walled area[2] within the modern city of Jerusalem.
The history of the Old City has been documented in significant detail, notably in old maps of Jerusalem over the last 1,500 years. This area constituted the entire city of Jerusalem until the late 19th century; neighbouring Arab villages such as Silwan and new Jewish villages such as Mishkenot Sha'ananim later became part of the municipal boundaries.

The Damascus Gate (Arabic: باب العامود, romanized: Bāb al-ʿĀmūd, Hebrew: שער שכם, Sha'ar Sh'khem) is one of the main Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem.[1] It is located in the wall on the city's northwest side and connects to a highway leading out to Nablus, which in the Hebrew Bible was called Shechem or Sichem, and from there, in times past, to the capital of Syria, Damascus; as such, its modern English name is the Damascus Gate, and its modern Hebrew name, Sha'ar Shkhem (שער שכם), meaning Shechem Gate, or in modern terms Nablus Gate.[1][2] Of its historic Arabic names, Bab al-Nasr (باب النصر) means "gate of victory", and Bab al-Amud (باب العامود) means "gate of the column".[1] The latter name, in use continuously since at least as early as the 10th century, preserves the memory of a Roman column towering over the square behind the gate and dating to the 2nd century AD.[1][3]

Jaffa Gate (Hebrew: שער יפו, romanized: Sha'ar Yafo; Arabic: باب الخليل, romanized: Bāb al-Khalīl, "Hebron Gate") is one of the seven main open Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem.
The name Jaffa Gate is currently used for both the historical Ottoman gate from 1538, and for the wide gap in the city wall adjacent to it to the south. The old gate has the shape of a medieval gate tower with an L-shaped entryway, which was secured at both ends (north and east) with heavy doors.
