Rooting 101: Micro-Rooting Methods for Beginner and Advanced Reborn Doll Artists

In order to determine what kind of needle you need, we first need to understand how you root.

There are a lot of rooting videos out there and every artist does it differently. But from my observation, they all fall into 3 categories:

Jab & Grab Method - you can guess from the name that this is not my favorite. LOL By repeatedly pushing the needle through a lock of hair, you root hairs on the head. For this to work, you must use a needle that only catches 1 hair on average. Otherwise, the rooting will look "pluggy." Also, be careful - its easy to stab a finger this way! You can root from the middle of the hair or from the end for a smoother, neater hairstyle.

Root-A-Loop - as the name would suggest, rooting this way is fun and accurate. LOL! Folding the hair in half, you can hook individual strands of hair to your needle and place them where you want in the vinyl. The only drawback to this method is that you're always rooting from the middle. But you have control over how many hairs you land in each hair plug - anywhere from single strands to big-chunky traditional doll hair plugs.

Single-Strand, Cuticle Aligned Rooting - this is the best rooting method for super-high-end reborn dolls. This is how I root my Masterpiece Collection baby dolls. By dragging a few strands out of your lock of hair, you can neatly place each one right where you want it in the vinyl. You can root strands close together for full hair or further apart for peach fuzz hair. Because the hair is cuticle-aligned, hair will lay flat and remain neat.
