Even though the first test flight of Starship version 3 hasn’t happened yet, excitement is already spreading online about which prototype might become the first Starship HLS. Many people are pointing to one particular vehicle — S44.
Back in August, S44 was suddenly pulled out of SpaceX’s usual production flow and stopped progressing like its siblings, ships 39 through 42. That alone raised eyebrows. But at the same time, SpaceX confirmed that the HLS cabin for the lunar lander is now under fabrication, and interestingly, no other spare nosecone has been spotted taking on that role.
So, when S44 disappeared from the normal ship lineup right as SpaceX began work on an HLS cabin, it looked like a pretty strong clue. It suggests S44’s nose section might have been repurposed into the first real HLS crew cabin, instead of a standard orbital Starship.
Fast forward to early December, and S44 was seen again in the Starfactory — still bald, without a heatshield or flaps — further fueling speculation that it’s not a normal flight article.

Now, to be clear, this is still an educated guess. But it lines up surprisingly well with the known timeline. HLS test flights are scheduled for 2026, paving the way for Artemis 3 in 2027. And SpaceX has already completed 49 key milestones in hardware testing and qualification, showing that the company is more than ready to take on the lunar lander challenge.
Here’s where it gets interesting. Based on current estimates, if S39 flies on Flight 12 and S40 on Flight 13, then S44 could take part in Flight 17 — possibly in the second half of 2026. That would place it between the planned orbital refueling demo in June 2026 and the uncrewed HLS landing in June 2027.
