Want Ansel Adams in your Developing Tank? Try this Barry Thornton 2-Bath
Two-Bath developers are great for when you want well controlled, easily developed negatives that are easy to make great scans from and need less burning and dodging to print. They're like having Ansel Adams inside your developing tank, developing each exposure individually.
Today I'm demonstrating Barry Thornton's famous two-bath metol developer. This is probably the most up-to-date of all the two-baths and ss sharp as Pyrocat-HD and 510-Pyro but much simpler in terms of development times for various films. If you want a no-fuss dev for all your films, this could be it!
To make Barry Thornton's two-bath with tablespoons (Tbl) and teaspoons (tsp):
Bath A
Metol = 2tsp
Sod. sulphite = 3Tbl + 1.5tsp
1Ltr water
Add a pinch of sulphite to the water before dissolving metol then rest of sulphite.
Bath B
Sod. metaborate = 2.5tsp
1Ltr water.
