Woodturning: A Deep Maple Burl Bowl

In this video I take a 8" x 6" spalted maple burl and turn it into simple, but elegant deep bowl.

This bowl was fairly punky and produced less shavings and way more dust. It also had a lot of tear out which made it challenging to get a smooth finish. That was until I remembered a trick I saw on Doug's channel (Pohl Barn Productions) which originally came from Kim Tippin. The idea is to take resin and thin it with acetone. The acetone allows the resin to sink down into the soft wood and then evaporate leaving the resin to harden and shore up the punky wood. This worked like a charm and I was able to get a much smoother finish.

To finish the bowl, I sanded it to 600 grit , cleaned off the dust with denatured alcohol, and sealed the wood with Myland sanding sealer. I followed up with Acks abrasive paste, Acks polishing paste, and for a nice glossy finish, Mylands Friction Polish.
