“The fight against terrorism is not the affair of a single country, it involves international cooperation. In fact, we have and continue to do so in the region. Just a few weeks ago, several of our soldiers fell on Iraqi soil as part of this coalition. That's the first point. At the same time, from the outset, France has said that Israel's right to defend itself must be exercised within a framework of international law, respect for the rules of war and international humanitarian law. STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron sought on Wednesday to promote the prospect of creating an “international coalition” to fight the armed Palestinian group Hamas.

He made the proposal during a two-day trip to the Middle East that started in Israel.

Yet the idea appears to have had little success.

The leaders he met in Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and Egypt didn’t publicly address the issue.

Macron first mentioned the idea on Tuesday at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The French presidency said it would not involve sending troops on the ground.

U.S. officials said they were aware of Macron’s proposal.
