How to unlock damaged lug nuts? #lugnuts #howto #howtofixcars #nissannavara
## How to Remove Damaged Lug Nuts
### Clean the Area
Spray a penetrating lubricant such as WD-40 or PB Blaster around the base of the damaged lug nut. Let it soak for several minutes to help loosen rust and corrosion.
### Use an Extractor Socket
Buy a lug nut or bolt extractor socket set from an auto parts store. These sockets have reverse-threaded grooves designed to grip rounded or stripped lug nuts when hammered into place. Once secured, use a ratchet or breaker bar to remove the nut.
### Try the “Smaller Socket” Method
If you do not have an extractor socket, hammer a slightly smaller 12-point socket over the damaged lug nut. Mixing metric and standard sizes can help—for example, a 19mm lug nut may fit tightly with a 3/4-inch socket. Attach a breaker bar and carefully loosen the nut.
Use an Impact Wrench
For stubborn lug nuts, use a high-torque impact wrench. The rapid bursts of force are often more effective than applying steady pressure by hand.
Common Causes of Damaged Lug Nuts
Swollen Lug Nuts
Many factory lug nuts use a two-piece design with a steel core and a chrome cap. Moisture can seep between the layers, causing the cap to swell and making the lug nut difficult to remove with standard sockets.
Over-Tightening
Using an impact wrench without properly hand-threading the lug nut first can round off the edges or damage the threads.
Cross-Threading
Cross-threading happens when a lug nut is installed at an angle and forced onto the wheel stud. This can destroy both the nut and the stud threads.
