Is Resident Evil Better Than RESIDENT EVIL?

Resident Evil is a household name by this point, the very franchise that came up with the term survival horror and which would loads of games thereafter would imitate and iterate on, so profound a formula had Capcom alighted upon. But while director Shinji Mikami often gets the lion's share of the praise, his directorial debut was much rockier and less his own doing than we've often been led to believe. Early on in development scenario writer Kenichi Iwao came up with the Umbrella Corporation and Raccoon City as we know them, changed the playable characters from Terminator like cyborgs to the humans we know and love, and took elements from his favorite game Alone in the Dark and some obscure MSX and SNES titles to balance the game's item drops and inform its combat as a last resort design. One might say this is kinda the backbone of the Resident Evil franchise and survival horror itself, and yet his name has been scrubbed from most of the franchise and genre's history. Why is that? Well, the answer's a bit tough to hear, especially if you're a big of Mikami like I am, but you've survived worse horrors I'm sure, so buckle up for the true story of Resident Evil's development you've probably never heard before and see how Mikami redeemed himself by the time he got the chance to remake Resident Evil, that game that almost didn't exist.
