"I think it's a fantastic initiative because the one thing that stopped me every time I flirted with the idea of going out on my own has been — I don't know where to start. I don't know where to start to know, to learn, to apply.

There is a little bit of kind of imposter syndrome, and the more I talk about imposter syndrome with colleagues and friends, the more I realize we all have it — especially women. And it's something that we need to help each other out of. Every time I kind of have a little bit of imposter syndrome, I talk to a girlfriend who's in the same space as me and she'll say that she's dealing with the same thing, and it helps me feel not alone.

And that brings us full circle back to SELL — the Self-Employed Lawyers League.

It helps you feel not alone, going through the same challenges with people doing the same thing at the same stages as you. Or even, you know, they might be a little bit behind you and then you can help them catch up. They might be a little bit in front of you and they help you catch up. And I think that is the beauty of it.

It's a community of people who think alike and who are doing similar things, in vastly different areas of law — as we've discovered recently — and all across Australia, which is actually kind of incredible.

The law is the law is the law, but the application of the law is different. And business is business is business, but the application of it is different.

And it's so nice to have a wealth of experience — not just from you and Courtney, who are incredible at this marketing gig and getting us to understand business development (which I think as lawyers we're very bad at generally — or maybe I should reframe that — not bad at, but haven’t learned yet).

You're providing us with these tools. And that’s something that I lack and feel very uncertain about. So it’s nice to have the modules to look through and say:

‘All right, what’s it today? Do I understand my taxes? No — let me go try and figure it a bit out with this module. And if I don’t, if there’s questions then, hey Lofty, can you help me?’

So I think that not feeling alone and being given the tools and resources — you're helping me fish instead of giving me the fish, right? And I like that. And it’s good that we can all be in that community together to do that with each other. And that’s the draw, I think, for me."
