SA-born American entrepreneur invests R3 bln towards SA's vaccine production ambitions

A South African-born American biotech medical entrepreneur has announced a three billion rand investment towards catalysing South African technological know-how as it relates to vaccine development. Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong - who was born in Gqeberha and studied at Wits Medical School in the 70s, is the Founder of Nantworks, a network of healthcare, biotech and artificial intelligence start-ups based in California. He made this investment announcement during a webinar hosted by the World Health Organisation this week.

So for many countries like South Africa, vaccine manufacturing capacity is a new frontier and collaborations like the one with Dr Soon-Shiong will be key to building and fortifying that capacity.
