Hi everyone, Paul from Ultimate Fat Burner's Smart about Supplements here and today I'm asking, are preworkout
powders good or bad?

I'll be right back in just a few seconds with the answer, stick around, don't go anywhere.

Alright welcome back. Now before I begin the discussion about whether preworkout powders are good or bad,
two quick comments...

The first is that any discussion like this is highly subjective and based partially on personal opinion. In other words, you may not agree with me on all of this stuff and that's totally cool.

The second point I want to make is that I'm talking in "generalities" here, and not about any specific product. Obviously the product you choose makes a big difference as to whether an preworkout powder is worth it or not - some products are great and formulated with a lot of thought, some are average, and some are crap.

So In this video I'm going provide information that applies to preworkout powders in general. That means depending on what product you're using, some of the points I make won't be relevant.

Make sense?

Cool! So let's begin this discussion with a list of 3 "pros" of preworkout powders...

Number 1

The Pump. A good preworkout powder will contain several grams of nitric oxide supplements like citrulline or arginine or agmatine or even a combination of two or 3 of them. These ingredients boost the release of nitric oxide, which dilates your blood vessels leading to enhanced blood flow, which can lead to an amazing pump, which is definitely a great feeling and my favorite aspect of these products.

Number 2

Energy. A lot of people really like this aspect of preworkout powders. Most of these products contain caffeine and other supportive ingredients that enhance focus and concentration and really get you jacked up for your workout.

Number 3

Supportive ingredients; and by that I mean that well formulated pre workout powders contain - in addition to the nitric oxide supplements mentioned earlier - ingredients that help you get the most our of your workout. These can include things like beta alanine, creatine, betain anhydrous, Peak ATP and so on.

So that's all good stuff, and reasons why you might want to try a pre workout powder.

Now what about the other side of the coin?

Great question. Now that we've talked about the pros, let's discuss the top 3 cons...

Number 1:

Shakey science:

What do I mean by this?

Well what I mean is that despite what you may read in the product advertising, many of the core nitric oxide ingredients found in these products have very little in the way of clinical evidence supporting their ability to actually boost athletic performance and muscle growth.

Number 2:

Crazy caffeine levels

Now I would argue that a shot a caffeine prior to a workout can be beneficial to getting the most out of it and in my expereience most people like this. However, the amount of caffeine present in some newer preworkout powders is 3-4 times what's present in a typical cup of coffee... between 300 - 400 mg per serving.

That means if you work out in the evening, or you have high blood pressure or heart issues or you're a little older and simply not into feeling like your heart is on the verge of exploding, then many of these products aren't for you.

Number 3:

Under dosed ingredients.

One of the most common dirty tricks used by supplement manuafacturers is to include a ton of ingredients on the label, because it looks really impressive.

You pick it up and you go "wow" look at all the stuff I'm getting... this must be a really great product.

The problem is that while it may appear impressive, there's so little of the various ingredients present that they actually won't have any effect.

The nutritional supplements, herbal ingredients and neutraceuticals present in preworkout supplements are not that different from pharmaceutical drugs in that they need to be present at an effect dose if they are to have any effect.

Dressing up the label with tons of ingredients may make it appear like the product is scientifically advanced or heavily researched and you're getting really good value for your money, but the truth is the opposite... you're getting little to no value from these ingredients.
