Till There Was You: Meredith Willson (1902-1984)

When Meredith Willson wrote “The Music Man” in 1957, he needed a show stopping love song for one of the scenes. Rather than compose a new song, he dusted off one he’d written and recorded in 1950. This old recording, beautifully sung by Eileen Wilson, had come and gone with barely a ripple. But Willson felt the song deserved a better fate. Originally entitled “Till I Met You,” Willson changed a few words and slid the obscure old song into his new musical. Since then it’s become one of the most beloved Broadway tunes of the 20th century, covered by artists as diverse as Sonny Rollins, Chet Atkins, Ray Charles, and the Beatles.
