There is a saying that practice makes perfect and that is exactly what is being expressed here.
you may read as many principle as you can absorb intellectually but until they are put into practice there is no experience of their reality.

a doctor doesn't become a doctor until he can practice all that he has learned theoretically. an engineer cannot make a machine just by reading instructions on how to do it. the final product will not be perfect until one has tried many times.
