Mother of 4 lost her home of 11 years #shorts
Nearly 30 per cent of Canadians, or 4.4 million households, rent their home.
Melanie Crawford is one of them. After living in a house in Brantford, Ont., for 11 years, her landlord called to say her family had to leave so the house could be renovated and sold.
“I was devastated. We all cried,” Crawford said. She was paying $1,450 a month for the four-bedroom house.
“I couldn't get a two-bedroom for that amount of money right now,” Crawford said. “So I have to pay double regardless.”
The Fifth Estate calculated that between 2014 and 2019, rents across Canada have increased by nearly 20 per cent. At the same time, incomes remained largely unchanged.
A recent report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said a two-bedroom apartment rental is beyond the reach of the average person who works full time in many cities.
Crawford was eventually able to find a new home to rent, but is paying $1,100 more a month for “significantly less space.”
Watch our full investigation, Priced out: Canada’s rental crisis, Thursday, Mar. 10 at 9 p.m. on CBC-TV, CBC Gem, or youtube.com/cbcfifth.
