Can BANGLADESH avoid RADICALISM? - VisualPolitik EN
Bangladesh is the World’s most densely populated country. This is also one of the fastest growing countries in the last two decades. In less than 20 years, Bangladesh has cut poverty in half. Today, they are the leader in textile manufacturing, only surpassed by China. In fact, I’m sure your shirt, your trousers or something else you’re wearing today is made here.
But wait a minute because it is still too soon to open the champagne bottle! Yes, Bangladesh grows fast. But still today, 13% of their population lives on less than 2 dollars a day. That’s 20 million people. Add to this the fact that Islam is the main religion in the country and you have a risk of radicalism. Terrorist attacks have increased in the country in the last years. Besides, the Bangladesh government is starting to accept some request from radical groups like Hefazat-e-Islam.
All of this is happening despite having a woman as a Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who rules the country with an iron fist. Hasina is, by far, the most powerful person in Bangladesh. And her political party, the Awami League, is the champion of secularism. Nonetheless, Dhaka is flirting with Islamism. Is it all for the sake of winning the next elections… or there is something more?
In today VisualPolitik video, we tell you all you need to know about Bangladesh’s politics.
