Linguistics II: Is Linguistics Science?

Whether or not we see linguistics as a science depends on what we understand science to be.
A definition that many people subscribe to insists on it being a relatively simple system of absolute rules or laws that precisely predict the data being studied. The data of languages are not treated well by such a model.
