When Edward Mordrake has been carried by his mother, there was actually another baby along with him in the womb. But because her mom was not able to carry them, one of the baby’s body got degenerated.

Edward was born with a second, almost feminine face with the particularity of being deformed which is attached to the back of his head. The extra face however did not have any functions connected to Edward’s body such as talking, breathing or taking in food.

It seems that when Edward tries to sleep at night, this “second personality” would whisper ,disturbing things to him which kept him up all night “.
