This week’s Rolê Design is going to be about Sérgio Rodrigues, from Rio, professedly one of the biggest names in Brazilian architecture and design. Admist an unprecedented interview with the master of design, made in October of 2007, and a visit to the exhibition that took place at Itaú Cultural in his honor, Jean Bergerot talks with the president of the Sérgio Rodrigues Institute, Fernando Mendes, about Sérgio’s life and work.
Sérgio is one of the cornerstones of national furniture design. His pieces carry Brazilian identity in their tracing and materials, besides being recognized for their original language by displaying robust and modern shapes. Among his most emblematic creations, there is the Mole armchair, the Mocho stool and the Diz armchair.
Sérgio Rodrigues passed away on September the 1st of 2014, at the age of 87. Having created more than a thousand models, mostly between the decades of 50 and 60, he has become consolidated as one of the major exponents from his professional area. He has also been consecrated countless times with prizes, besides being one most requested names when it comes to setting furniture.
