Monoprint Stencil Collage | Refining the Image

The process of refining the image as I use stencil monoprints to create a red and gold collage.

Ever have an idea in mind? – a great idea – you can see it in your mind’s eye – you’re so excited - and so you get to work.

Then, ewwww….. not quite what you thought it would be. That happened to me twice with the monoprint collage I worked on this week.

I had made 4 similar stenciled monoprints with red and ochre/gold ink on newsprint a few years ago. I liked the patterns I achieved, but individually, they didn’t hold up. And I just couldn’t figure out how to put them together.
Recently, I had an idea. I would cut them into strips and “weave” them together. Well, that turned out to be way to busy.

I switched to horizontal stripes. Better, but not really doing it for me. I added a few more stripes. I squinted at the piece and argued with myself that really it was o.k. and what was I complaining about. But it still didn’t feel right. The balance wasn’t there, and my eye was drawn all over the place. Peace had not been achieved.

I left it overnight. The next morning, I decided to calm it down a bit with a sold-ish bit of red in the middle to break up the busyness.
Whew! That worked.
