Landslides are the mass movements of rock, debris, and soil down a slope of land, usually caused by the failure of the soil or rock that makes up a hill-slip.
Large trees have stronger root structures that can penetrate underlying bedrock and anchor soil. When these trees are cut down, their roots start to decay and lose their strength, decreasing soil cohesion. In addition, since cut down trees are no longer living, they have a lack of leaves that can transpire water out from the soil. This can cause soil saturation, which once again decreases the cohesion of soil and increases landslide risk.
Some studies have shown that clearcutting increases landslide rates 20 times higher than the background landslide rates in forested areas!
