Massage for stiff big toe. Hallux rigidus. Raynor Foot massage in Mackay, Queensland, Australia pt3

This is the third part of a series of videos showing Naturopath Brandon Raynor working on Emma in our massage class in Mackay. Emma has a very stiff big toe called Hallux Rigidus

Hallux rigidus is a condition characterized by stiffness and limited movement in the big toe joint, often resulting in pain and discomfort. While massage therapy cannot cure hallux rigidus, it can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall foot health. Here are some massage techniques that may provide relief for individuals with hallux rigidus:

Toe Circles: Gently rotate the big toe in circular motions using your fingers. Start with small circles and gradually increase the size as comfort allows. This can help improve flexibility and range of motion in the toe joint.

Toe Flexion and Extension: Hold the base of the big toe with one hand and gently flex and extend the toe joint using the other hand. Perform this motion slowly and smoothly, focusing on increasing mobility in the joint.

Toe Pulls: Hold the big toe with one hand and gently pull it away from the foot, stretching the toe joint. Hold the stretch for a few seconds, then release. Repeat several times, gradually increasing the intensity of the stretch as tolerated.

Foot Arch Massage: Massage the arch of the foot using your thumbs or knuckles in circular motions. Pay particular attention to any areas of tension or discomfort. This can help relieve pressure on the big toe joint and improve overall foot alignment.

Plantar Fascia Massage: Massage the sole of the foot, focusing on the plantar fascia – the band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Apply firm pressure with your thumbs or a massage ball, working from the heel to the base of the toes. This can help reduce tension in the foot and alleviate pain associated with hallux rigidus.

Calf Massage: Massage the calf muscles using long, fluid strokes with your hands or a massage tool. Tight calf muscles can contribute to foot pain and stiffness, so releasing tension in this area can help improve overall foot mobility.

Ankle Mobility Exercises: Perform gentle ankle rotations and flexion-extension movements to improve mobility in the ankle joint. Increased ankle mobility can help compensate for limited movement in the big toe joint and reduce strain on the foot.

It's essential to perform these massage techniques gently and gradually, especially if you're experiencing pain or discomfort. Start with light pressure and increase as tolerated, and always listen to your body's cues. Additionally, consider consulting with a healthcare professional or a licensed massage therapist who can provide personalized guidance and recommendations based on your specific condition and needs. They can also offer advice on other treatment options, such as orthotic devices, physical therapy, or medical interventions, to manage hallux rigidus effectively
