Benefits to spacing your retwists:

Reduces scalp tension — Having your hair tightly twisted all the time (common with those who retwist too frequently) puts your scalp in a constant state of tension. Prolonged tension can lead to a permanent form of hair loss called "traction alopecia." Remember the drama concerning Naomi Campbell's hair loss from tight weaves? The same thing can happen if you're not careful with braids or locs, too! Natural hair doesn't automatically equal healthy hair!
Thickens your new growth — If your roots are under constant strain, some hairs can fall out, and that hair loss will lead to smaller locs. We've all seen locs that are really skinny at the roots and flare out thicker and thicker toward the ends. This is often a telling sign of gradual hair loss. However, even if you don't experience any hair loss, locs that are twisted often are better encouraged to stay in the thin, tightly twisted shape. If you want thicker locs, spacing your retwists a month apart is a good option.
Decreases costs — No matter if you do your hair yourself or go to a salon, retwisting cost time and/or money. If you don't have much time or money to spare, only having to dedicate one day every four weeks to retwisting is a smart choice.
Despite these advantages, there are some situations where spacing out your retwists would be an unwise choice!

Drawbacks to spacing your retwists:

Potentially "unprofessional" appearance — Though some people don't agree with this, others think the look of looser, fuzzy roots look messy and unprofessional. What if one of those people is your employer? If you are on the job hunt, it's advisable to get a nice retwist before you go to an interview; you don't want to risk making a bad impression, even for something that is pretty silly and insignificant in the big picture.
General aesthetics — Job hunting aside, if you don't like the look of fuzzy roots as a personal aesthetic preference, then spacing out your retwists may not be fore you. If you don't like your hair, then that's no good! Always do what makes you feel best.
Puts short, young locs at risk for unraveling — If your hair is exceptionally short and you feel it hasn't knotted up yet, I suggest doing regular retwists, at least until a bit of the ends of your locs are knotted up enough to stay on their own. Even a half-inch segment of knotting is sufficient enough to hold your locs together. You just want to have a bit of security, just so you don't wash and condition your hair a few times and have your locs come completely loose and have all of your sectioning ruined.

Though it's commonplace to say that all black people's hair knots up nearly overnight, that isn't true for some! If you have a looser curl pattern, or even naturally soft hair, it can be a bit of a struggle to get your knots well on their way, and retwisting less often can make that process potentially difficult if you have short hair. All hair locs if left alone, but 1-2" hair would take ages without the help of retwisting, no way around it!
