Tony Roberts' daughter, Nicole Burley, confirmed that the cause of death was complications from lung cancer. Born David Anthony Roberts on October 22, 1939, in Manhattan, Roberts was the son of Ken Roberts, a well-known radio announcer, and Norma (Fienstein), who worked as an assistant to a film producer and animator.

Roberts was known for portraying laid-back, self-assured characters, often serving as a foil to Woody Allen's insecure protagonists. He appeared in several of Allen's films, including "Annie Hall," where he played Rob, a taller, more attractive, and confident friend to Allen's character, Alvy Singer. Roberts also took on similar roles in films like "A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy," "Stardust Memories," and "Hannah and Her Sisters".

His first collaboration with Allen was in the comedy "Play It Again, Sam" (1972), which Allen wrote but Herbert Ross directed. Roberts played a businessman oblivious to his wife's longing for attention. Roberts, Allen, and Keaton originally performed in "Play It Again, Sam" on Broadway in 1969.

Roberts had a successful Broadway career, receiving Tony Award nominations for "Best Featured Actor in a Play" for "Play It Again, Sam" and "Best Actor in a Musical" for "How Now, Dow Jones". Clive Barnes of The New York Times praised Roberts as a "bundle of talent" with a "wildly expressive terrier face and eyebrows that move independently". Roberts also starred in the London production of "Promises, Promises" and appeared in regional theater productions.

Before becoming Woody Allen's go-to film companion, Roberts starred alongside Dean Jones in Disney's "The Million Dollar Duck" (1971). He also played significant roles in films such as "Serpico" (1973) and "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974). His final appearance on Broadway was in 2009 in "The Royal Family". His last role was in a 2017 TV movie adaptation of "Dirty Dancing".
