Kansas City Man Charged with 14 Armed Robberies: Faces Life Sentence

A Kansas City man has been indicted on multiple charges for allegedly robbing 14 convenience stores at gunpoint between July and September of 2024. Thirty-one-year-old Marquise L. North faces a 31-count indictment, including 14 counts of Hobbs Act robbery, one count of attempted Hobbs Act robbery, and 14 counts of brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime. He is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The Hobbs Act, under which North is charged, is a federal law designed to combat robbery and extortion that affects interstate or foreign commerce. It is commonly applied in cases involving organized crime, public corruption, and violent offenses. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, North allegedly utilized a gun in each robbery during the specified timeframe, and he has a prior felony conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm.

If convicted, North could face a life sentence in federal prison, with brandishing a firearm during a violent crime carrying a minimum sentence of seven years.
