Although Amanda Kingsley (Loretta Young) is now extremely wealthy, she remembers her hardscrabble upbringing and tries to help the less fortunate around her. Conversely, her business-minded son, Andrew (Arthur Hill), has never wanted for anything, and has become hardhearted. Upon receiving bad medical news, Amanda engages down-at-heel private investigator Morris Huffner (Ron Leibman) to track down Andrew's three estranged children before Christmas Eve for one final family holiday.

Artur Hill a Canadian actor best known for appearances in British and American theatre, films, and television. Hill was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan, and served as a mechanic in the Royal Canadian Air Force before attending the University of British Columbia, where he studied law, but was lured to the stage.

Hill made his Broadway debut as Cornelius Hackl in the 1957 revival of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker. In 1963 he won the Tony Award for Best Dramatic Actor for his portrayal of George in the original Broadway production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (with Uta Hagen). Arguably, Hill's most famous acting role was that of lawyer Owen Marshall, the lead role in the 1971–74 TV series Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law. He appeared on many other series, including The Reporter, and played Grandpa Lansford Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie (1976).

Hill died in a Pacific Palisades, California, nursing home, aged 84, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean.

Ron Leibman was born in New York City in 1937 and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. He has been married to actress Jessica Walter since 1983 and was previously married to actress Linda Lavin

Leibman is most known for providing the voice of Ron Cadillac in Archer and for playing Dr. Leonard Green, Rachel's rich, short-tempered father, on the sitcom Friends.

Trevor Howard was an English film actor born in Cliftonville, Kent, England. After varied stage work, he achieved star status with his role in the film Brief Encounter (1945), followed by The Third Man (1949). This led to many popular appearances on film and TV.

While filming White Mischief (1988) on location in Kenya during 1987, Howard was seriously ill and suffering from alcoholism. The Dawning (1988) was his final film. He died on 7 January 1988 from hepatic failure and cirrhosis of the liver in Arkley, Barnet, aged 74.
