M-Audio AV42 and Makcie CR4 are two powered pairs of studio monitors that fights against each other in the ultra budget category. These are the entry monitors for many homegrown music producers. Which one should is better tool for than? Well, build quality is similar in both and the beauty is in the eye of beholder, so no winner here. What about sound quality? Here Mackie proves to be much better choice for the targeted demographic. First of all, CR4 has more clarity and natrural tone in top end and upper midrange, AV42 sounds vailed in comparison. Both unfortunately have boomy and hollow bass response, but I have to give a slight nod to AV42 here for a bit more extension down low and more meaty slam. Overall I find Mackie CR4 to be better (all though not perfect) monitor for begginers.
