I wish I could tell you for sure who composed this archetypal 12-bar blues in Bb. The seminal recording was made by Gertrude 'Ma' Rainey on 15 October 1924. The composer is usually given as Ma Rainey herself. But some sources say a joint composer was Cora 'Lovie' Austin (1887-1972), the classically-trained pianist and bandleader who certainly worked with Ma Rainey. Sometimes Lena Arant is named as Rainey's co-composer; but who was she? Could Lena Arant be a pseudonym used by Lovie Austin? Can anyone provide information?
