Homosexuality and God: 6 Passages that Every Christian Should Study and Pray About

Our culture tells us that homosexuality should be celebrated, but what does the Bible say? Wherever you stand on this issue, if you’re trying to get a biblical perspective you’ll want to study these six passages.

Genesis 19
The most famous occurrence of homosexual behavior in the Bible comes in the first book of the Bible. It’s the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, and it gives us our first insight into the topic. (See also Ezekiel 16:49-50.)

Genesis 19 5 They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!” 6 So Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. 7 “Please, my brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing.”
Leviticus 18 and Leviticus 20
The book of Leviticus delineates the laws and punishments of the Israelite nation under God. Chapter 18 lists forbidden sexual practices – most of which clearly apply in our American culture today. That’s the context for verse 22.

Leviticus 18:22 Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.
Chapter 20 of the same book adds more information on sin and consequences for the fledgling nation of Israel. This passage is especially hard for people today because of the extreme punishment prescribed for sin – but note that the New Testament answers this issue with the sacrifice of Jesus (Romans 6:23).

Leviticus 20:13 If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.
1 Corinthians 6 and 1 Timothy 1
The New Testament is not silent on the issue of homosexuality. When writing to a church in the pagan culture of Corinth, Paul puts it squarely in the middle of a list of sins.

1 Corinthians 6 9 Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.
To his young pastoral prodigy Timothy, he writes to further clarify the teaching.

1 Timothy 1:10 The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching…
Notice that homosexuality is not listed as the ultimate or unpardonable sin in these passages. But neither is it dismissed as lawful or normative for pursuers of God.

Romans 1
Perhaps the most critical passage for believers today who want to align with a biblical worldview on this topic comes from Paul’s letter to the Christians in Rome. In the first chapter he explains God’s anger against a sinful, self-determined culture.

Romans 1 26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.
If, indeed, God’s Word is clear on the issue of homosexuality – defining it not as the BIG sin but as a definite sin – then followers of Jesus are called to stand with the Bible even when the culture calls us to stand against it (Romans 1:32). This does not mean we point fingers with arrogance or hate, but rather lovingly invite others into a relationship with God that offers freedom for those who trust in Jesus.
