US national debt due to ‘tax cuts’ and ‘wasteful spending’

The rise in the US national debt to a historic high of $US34 trillion is due to “tax cuts” and “wasteful spending”, Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews says.

Members of Congress are gearing up for another series of federal funding battles in the coming weeks.

“Pretty high there – the highest ever before in our history,” Mr Mathews told Sky News Australia.

“We should also look at what causes this debt: it’s basically tax cuts on the wealthiest segments of our population, like the $1.7 trillion tax cut that … blows up the deficit, but also spending – excess and wasteful spending in certain areas add to the deficit.

“So, it’s tax cuts and wasteful spending.

“We’ve got to stop these massive tax cuts on the wealthiest segments of our society and big corporations – that also drives up deficit.”
