Open Design is the open-source answer to Claude Design — local-first, BYOK, Apache 2.0, running on whatever coding agent you already have.
Claude Design dropped April 17th. Within four days, the community had built an alternative with 12,968 stars, 129 design systems, and 31 composable skills.

What's inside: 11 coding CLIs auto-detected on your PATH (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Qwen, and 6 more). A local daemon that reads real on-disk files with real tools — not a sandboxed toy environment. 70 product design systems with four-color palettes for Linear, Stripe, Vercel, Airbnb, Apple, Notion, Anthropic, and more.

The design loop is skill-driven: lock a brief, pick from 5 visual schools, watch a plan stream live, then get an artifact in a sandboxed iframe — on your hardware, with your key.

BYOK routes through an OpenAI-compatible proxy. Plug in DeepSeek, Groq, OpenRouter, or your own vLLM. Data lives in SQLite on your machine. Fork it, deploy it to Vercel, ship it under your own name — Apache 2.0, no permission required.
