Walk the Romantic Old Town of Nafplio, Greece

Nafplio is one of the most beautiful cities in the eastern Peloponnese as well as one of the most romantic cities in all of Greece. Nafplio was the first capital of the newborn Greek state between 1823 and 1834. The history of the city dates back to prehistoric times, when local warriors participated in the Argonaut mission and the Trojan War.

The city declined in Roman times and flourished again in Byzantine times. Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors left their mark on the city and strongly influenced its culture, architecture and traditions over the centuries. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings enchant the visitor with their unique architecture and beauty.

Just 2 hours drive from Athens, the city of Nafplio has a strong medieval atmosphere. A walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the Old Town is like a journey into the past. At the top of the hill above Nafplio, there is the powerful fortress of Palamidi with stunning sea view. At the entrance of the port, there is a small islet with a fortress that protected the city from naval attacks.

Nafplio is a popular destination all year round. Its wonderful beach resorts as well as the many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops, also make it a great destination for summer vacation.
