I'm searching for my missing family after Libya's floods | Close Up

On the night of September 10th, 2023, Abubaker Almortadha al-Jazwi went to sleep hoping he would finally rest after a long day at work. Instead, he was awakened at 3am by a strong sound that reminded him of an engine.
Describing the moment he stepped outside his home in Derna, eastern Libya, al-Jazwi says, “There was someone coming towards me, barefoot, holding a torch …I said [to the man] ‘What’s wrong, son? What’s wrong?’ And he told me the street is covered in water. There are injured people and dead bodies everywhere.”
After Storm Daniel smashed into eastern Libya, triggering the collapse of two dams outside Derna and leaving 20,000 missing, al- Jazwi sets out to search for his five relatives.
