Raag Kaunsi Kanada | Roopa Panesar | Artist from residence | Bazm e Khas
Presenting Raag Kaunsi Kanada played by Roopa Panesar on sitar.
Roopa Panesar:
Roopa Panesar is considered one of the finest sitar players to emerge on the Indian Classical Music scene from the UK. She is a disciple of the renowned educationalist and leading musician of the UK, Ustad Dharambir Singh ji MBE (a disciple of the late Ustad Vilayat Khan), and was recognized as a talent for the future. She began her training at the age of seven, under her Guru until present day. She also learnt from the senior most disciple of the late Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Arvind Parikh ji. Her musical vision has been enriched while receiving guidance from other outstanding musicians visiting the UK including Ustad Shahid Parvez and Ustad Bahauddin Dagar.
Roopa has toured extensively in the UK, Europe and USA performing at prestigious venues and festivals and released her debut album “Khoj” in 2011. She performed in her debut tour of India in 2014 where she played to vibrant audiences in Delhi, Mumbai and SRA Kolkatta. She had a highly successful tour in USA in 2017 and has played in major festivals like Darbar Festival and Womad.
She has had the honour of performing before and received blessings from spiritual masters and eminent musicians including Sri Satya Sai Baba, Shri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji (Namdhari), Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma), Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and the late Ustad Vilayat Khan.
Roopa, also a qualified Chemical Engineer, is involved in numerous projects to inspire and educate the next generation of Indian classical musicians in the UK.
This unplugged and unrehearsed video has been made during very difficult times of second wave of covid infection. Our special thanks to Roopa Panesar for showing courage to shoot this video during such difficult times for the sake of Bazm e Khas listeners.
Raag Kaunsi Kanada:
This Raag is rendered in two independent ways: Bageshri Ang and Malkauns Ang. However Malkauns Ang is more popular which is a mixture of two Raags: Malkauns and Kanada. Rendering with good amount of Meend, Khatkas and Gamaks produce a standing sweet melodic effect on the audience.
The idea behind this purely non-monetized upload is to preserve this great treasure (Dharohar) of live music produced by BeK for all the music lovers and students of Hindustani music.
