Using the Listening-Reading method - Rick Dearman | PGO 2020
The core of Listening – Reading is as simple as reading in your native language while you listen in your target language. But there are a few caveats, cautions, additional steps and guidelines to follow. The process, at its core, involves a long text (preferably a novel) in L1 and L2, it's L2 audiobook and the following three steps:
1. Read the text in L1 to familiarize yourself with it.
2. Listen to the audiobook while reading along in L2.
3. Listen to the audiobook while reading along in L1.
In this presentation, I'll cover the method itself as well as my experiences using it to boost my listening comprehension and share some other peoples stories.
Rick has attended all but 2 gatherings and given presentations at a number of them. Rick is the administrator of the Language Learners Forum, the largest language learning forum on the Internet. Rick has written more than twenty books either under his own name or as a ghost writer and has worked as a cook, dishwasher, aircraft mechanic, computer programmer, IT manager and most recently the Head of Operations for an agriculture company. His non-fiction includes books on problem solving, language learning and meditation. Rick’s fiction books are thrillers or fantasy novels packed with action. Rick is a keen learner and has taught himself French and Italian, and is learning Mandarin and Setswana.
