Troy in Turkey. Archaeological excavations reveal that Troy was a multi-layered city.

Explore the legendary ancient city of Troy, located in northwestern Turkey near the Dardanelles Strait, a place where myth and history come together. Known as Troia, this iconic archaeological site is best known as the setting of Homer’s epic poem The Iliad and the legendary Trojan War, including the famous story of the Trojan Horse.

Archaeological excavations reveal that Troy was a multi-layered city built and rebuilt over thousands of years. Scholars have identified nine major settlement layers, dating from the Early Bronze Age to the Roman period. These layers show evidence of powerful defensive walls, advanced engineering, and repeated destruction, suggesting Troy’s long history as a strategic and contested city.

Many historians associate Troy VII with the Trojan War, believed to have taken place around 1200 BCE. Burned ruins and weapon fragments found at the site support the idea of a violent conflict, although debate continues over how much of the story is myth versus historical fact.

Today, Troy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Turkey’s most important ancient landmarks. Visitors can explore the ruins, learn about ancient civilizations, and experience a site that has inspired legends for over 3,000 years.
