Mossberg Maverick 88

It is manufactured by Mossberg as their budget friendly pump action option. The Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500 share a lot of the same DNA. They are incredibly similar guns. Both use the exact same twin action bars and dual extractors for reliable cycling. They both feature an anti-jam elevator. Barrels and stocks are completely interchangeable between the two models, assuming the gauge and magazine tube lengths match. There are a few big differences that account for the lower price tag on the Maverick. The safety location is the most obvious change. The 500 has a thumb operated top tang safety, while the Maverick 88 uses a cross-bolt safety on the trigger guard. The Maverick 88 receiver does not come drilled and tapped for optics mounts. The Mossberg 500 receiver is pre-drilled and tapped right out of the box. Swapping the forend on a Maverick 88 is difficult because it is pinned as a single piece to the action bars. The 500 has a separate slide action tube that makes customization much easier. The Maverick 88 is assembled in Texas using some imported parts from Mexico, while the 500 is completely American made. Both are incredibly reliable options for the range or the field.
