KVEA National Senior Health & Fitness Day
Empowering Seniors to Thrive ON NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH & FITNESS DAY
QueensCare Health Centers (QHC), a healthcare provider to low-income members of the Los Angeles community, is celebrating National Senior Health & Fitness Day with activities focusing around senior health. Year round, QHC provides health care to thousands of seniors in Los Angeles.
Here are some facts about health concerns of older Americans:
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, older Americans suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and cancer at disproportionate rates than their younger counterparts.
Most chronic conditions that affect seniors can be avoided through lifestyle changes, like obtaining primary care early and regularly, exercising more, and eating nutritious food.
One of the first steps to good health is understanding your Medicare benefits. QueensCare Health Centers Health Advocates and JAR Insurance Services are available to walk families through the complicated process of Medicare.
According to the CDC, 31 million Americans (28 percent) age 50 years and older are sedentary. This inactivity puts these 31 million at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Seniors may be at risk for falls, but that should not discourage regular physical activity. Seniors needn’t train for a triathlon; moderate activity like walking or swimming is low-impact and can reduce your risk of many chronic conditions.
Data from the US Dept. of Health and Human Services states that non-institutionalized adults age 50 and over account for $860 billion in healthcare costs each year. 4 out of 5 of the chronic conditions for this age group can be prevented or managed with physical activity.
ABOUT QUEENSCARE HEALTH CENTERS: Our mission is to provide quality primary healthcare that is accessible to any patient in need in the communities we serve, regardless of ability to pay.
