What do you think of this Harry Potter Theory suggested by firablackmoore4345? The theory says: James didn't actually love Lily when they first got together. James knew that Snape was in love with her and just wanted to steal her from him and make his life more miserable. That is also why James wasn't able to save Lily with a love protection spell. The same one that saved Harry.
